In 1962, the first neuro-surgeon in Jordan, the late Dr Anton Tarazi practiced this specialty in Jerusalem and at the Army Base Hospital in Amman. He introduced myelography, direct needle puncture carotid angiography and air-ventriculography.
In 1963, Dr Mahmud Fayyad was attached to the radiology department at King's College Hospital London for two years for training in diagnostic radiology at the end of which he obtained the D.M.R.D. in October 1965.
He used to attend neuro-radiology sessions at the Maudsley hospital with Dr Richard Hoare who was the chief and only neuro-radiologist at the Hospital.
Dr Fayyad performed lumbar myelography at the Army Base Hospital since November 1965.
He became the director of the department in August 1967.
Dr Fayyad was attached again to King's College Hospital radiology department on lrst May 1970 to study for the F.F.R. examination which he passed in October 1970.
In November 1970, he was attached to the Hospital for nervous diseases, Queen Square London, to observe neuroradiology investigations, then he rotated in different specialized hospitals for one month at each hospital.
He got further experience in contrast myelography and air encephalography at Queen Square as well as cerebral angiography, air myelography and encephalography at the Hospital for Sick Children.
He got a locum radiologist job at the I.O.D.E. Hospital in Windsor, Ontario, Canada for 6 weeks from 15' march to 31" May 1971 where he used to do myelography and air encephalography, in addition to general radiology.
In June 1976, one of the first (EMI) brain CT scanners if not the first was installed at K.H.M.C. This CT service was for the whole country including the Jordan University Hospital, private sector and Ministry of Health Hospitals.
Carotid angiography was done by neuro-surgeons.
Dr Fayyad returned to Jordan and started working at the Army Base Hospital as the Director of the Radiology Department and used to perform direct puncture carotid angiography and myelography.
He became the director of radiology Department at King Hussein Medical center in August 1973, when the center was open for business.
Dr Fayyad was attached to the National Hospital for nervous diseases under the late Dr James Bull and at the neuro-radiology Department at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street under Dr Richard Hoare for one year from 1st June 1974 till 31st May 1975, where he got further experience in direct needle puncture carotid angiog-raphy percutaneous femoral catheterization for performing selective carotid and vertebral angiography.
He was the director of brain CT section at Queen Square from 1st January till 31st May 1975.
Dr Fayyad trained all the residents working with him to perform neuro-radiologic procedures.
The chief neuro-surgeon at K.H.M.C. was Ishaq Maraga and the chief neurologist was Dr Ashraf Kurdi.
There was complete harmony among the members of the neuro-sciences team concerning procedures and teaching of residents.
Patients from Syria used to come to have this examination done at K.H.M.C.
The first whole body CT scanner in Jordan (G.E. 8800) was installed at K.H.M.C. in 1981 where the service was available for all medical sectors in the country.
During the 80's more and more CT scanners were installed in different Hospitals including University and Ministry of Health Hospitals as well as private clinics.

More and more MRI units were installed in the public and private sector Hospitals in the nineties.
Dr Fayyad became corresponding member of the R.S.N.A. in July 1983 and attended the meetings almost yearly and is still a member till now. Many Jordanian radiologists attend the R.S.N.A. meetings every year.
He was a founding member of the Jordanian Neuro-sciences Society in May 1985
The Jordanian Radiological Society was born in 1984. country.
Dr Fayyad was elected president of the J.R.S. twice from 1986-1988 and from 1995-1997.
The J.R.S. was very active in organizing up to date international radiology meetings.
